- On August 5, 2025, President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order to create a special group called the White House Task Force on the 2028 Summer Olympics. This group, led by the President and Vice President and including many top government officials, is meant to help plan and manage important parts of the Olympics, like safety, transportation, and visas for visitors. The task force will work with different government agencies and local partners to prepare for the Games, which the order says will bring millions of visitors to the U.S. The group will be based in the Department of Homeland Security and must report on their progress by October 1, 2025. The task force will stop working after December 31, 2028, unless the President decides to keep it going. The order says it does not change any existing legal powers of government agencies and depends on available funding. This action affects many parts of the federal government and aims to coordinate their efforts for the Olympics, but the order itself does not create any new legal rights for anyone outside the government. The government updated the way Medicare pays hospitals that treat people with mental health problems in special psychiatric facilities. Starting October 1, 2025, these hospitals will get a small increase in their daily payment rate—from about $877 to about $893 per day—and a slight increase in the extra payment for a treatment called electroconvulsive therapy, from about $662 to about $674 per treatment. Hospitals in rural areas and teaching hospitals will see changes in how their payments are adjusted to better match their costs. Also, some quality reporting rules for these hospitals are changing: four measures, including one about health equity and two about social needs screening, will be removed to reduce paperwork. These changes help ensure hospitals get fair payment to care for patients and reduce unnecessary reporting burdens, which can improve care for people needing mental health treatment. The U.S. Department of State wants to change the rules for people who enter the Diversity Visa Program, which lets people from certain countries apply for a chance to live in the United States. Starting when this rule is final, everyone who applies must provide details from their valid, unexpired passport, including a clear scan of the page with their photo and signature, or say why they don’t have one. This rule is meant to stop fraud, like fake applications or scams by third parties, and to make sure only real people apply. People who want to enter the program must follow this rule when they submit their application during the yearly entry period, which lasts at least 30 days each year. This change helps protect U.S. security and makes the visa process fairer by preventing dishonest entries. Read full document →
